Area: Piemonte/ Piedmont
Grapes: Montebruna is a Barbera d’Asti DOCG that comes from 100% Barbera grapes owned in Rocchetta Tanaro.
In the cellar: The must spends two weeks in temperature-controlled steel tanks, where it ferments, and is then transferred to large oak barrels to age for a year.
Tasting: Purplish ruby red colour. Very evident scents of ripe cherry and red berries. The flavour is deep, full and harmonious, with a persistent finish that lingers on the palate, ending with a hint of almond. Excellent, balanced, fragrant and very easy to drink, it accompanies pasta dishes, red and white meats, cheeses and cured meats.
Awards (Vintage 2020)
93 points Falstaff Guide: “Dark ruby red with purple highlights. The nose is spiced, with vanilla and cinnamon paired with ripe cherries and plums. Soft and juicy on the palate, there’s a good balance between acidity and tannin. Stays long on the palate and finishes with echoes of cherry. (10/16/23)”
92 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): “The 2020 Barbera d’Asti Montebruna is dark and sumptuous right out of the gate. Spice, leather, tobacco, menthol, dried flowers and mocha all come together as this intense, voluptuous Asti Barbera shows off its considerable charm. In 2021 the Montebruna is quite dense and brooding in character, but all the elements are impeccably balanced. Drink: 2022-2028. (Dec 2022)”
92 points Wine Enthusiast: “[$33 list] This wine opens with aromas of black cherry both fresh and macerated, giving way to wildflowers, savory spice and wild herbs. The palate is concentrated with lush ripe red and blackberries, cola and sweet spice. Round and fleshy, the wine is balanced with the natural acidity of the Barbera itself. Alcohol 15%. Drink now–2035. (Oct 2023)”
91 points Monica Larner (Wine Advocate): “The 2020 Barbera d’Asti Montebruna is a plump and rich red with ripe berry notes, toasted spice, cinnamon and grilled Mediterranean herb. Despite the heft and brawn of this wine, the mouthfeel is pushed along by fresh acidity and a powerful 15% alcohol content. This is perfect companion to a meal heavy in cheese or cream. Drink: 2023-2028. (8/24/23)”
91 points James Suckling: “Aromas of cherry chocolate, dark licorice, hints of bark and moist earth. Full-bodied with velvety, supple tannin structure and some chalky texture in the finish. Juicy and flavorful. Drink now. (11/7/23)”
